Internet black boxes still on the cards
It seems that the government’s plans to store all of the websites visited and emails received and sent is still on the cards, and how they plan to do this was revealed at a meeting between government officials and several internet service providers such as BT, Sky Broadband, O2 and AOL Europe.
The plan is to install black boxes, which collects the data; this will be then transferred to the massive database where various government officials and no doubt local government officials can access it too.
Although these plans were delayed from going into the Queens speech, it is believed that the government still plan to push this through as part of the Communications Data Bill some time during the early part of 2009.
However, the Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas has gone on record as saying that this is a step too far.
