Web Power usage under fire

It is amazing to find that by doing a simple search on Google uses enough power to keep an 11 watt light bulb alight for hour. This is a mere search, so you can imagine the power requirements that are needed to download a music track, TV programme or film!

So in total it has been estimated that Google will use up around 1.8 billion watt hours per day and this does not include the amount of power that is required to keep the Google complex running either, could this mean that the green efforts of Google are a mere drop in the ocean?

The problem is data centres require huge amounts of power just to keep going, despite the fact that they are trying to turn green by installing solar and wind power. But the question has to be that, can this keep going? As the internet users require more speed the power consumption of the net is going to just keep rising.
